The talented Emily Pearlman, Mikki Bradshaw, and Shara Weaver join Eleanor Crowder and Sarah Waisvisz as the core Creative Team behind Monstrous.
EMILY PEARLMAN, Dramaturge
Emily is a theatre maker from Ottawa. Her collaborative pieces include a site-adaptive parlour piece (Countries Shaped Like Stars); a reconciliation concert with stories (REVISED from the Belly of a Whale); an ambulatory intergenerational collaboration for non-decision makers (Collapsible); a furtive speed-date for person and fur coat (HIDE); and a site-specific satire for boardrooms (We Glow). She has toured this work to over 50 venues in 17 cities across Canada and into New Mexico. As a director/dramaturg she has worked with playwrights, poets, DIY theatre collectives, dancers, film-makers and sound artists in Ottawa, Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal and Ohio. Recent collaborating companies include Horseshoes&Handgrenades, Thunk Theatre, Salamander Theatre and Evolution Theatre. Emily holds an MFA in Devised Performance Creation from Simon Fraser University and teaches theatre and writing at the University of Ottawa and Algonquin College. She has received five Prix Rideau Awards and been nominated for thirteen as a writer, performer and director.
MIKKI BRADSHAW, Sound Designer
Mikki Bradshaw is a versatile artist who has worked in various performance and entertainment mediums for over 20 years. Highlights of his artistic career include, but are not limited to, creating and implementing of a “By youth. For youth” touring theatre company called Misconceptions; working as the Mainspace Technician at Buddies In Bad Times Theatre; Associate Directing a documentary (Shine On), on the history of the music scene in Ottawa, Ontario; opening for Tegan and Sara, Kinnie Starr, and Melissa Ferrick; performing/ facilitating/ teaching for various GLBTQ organizations in Ottawa from 1998 – 2015; and writing music and singing solo and with various bands and shows since the age of 4. Mikki’s artistic choices are eclectic, ethereal, and layered, ranging from writing, acting, dance, spoken word, directing, producing, sound design, singing and songwriting. Mikki believes that the arts saved and sustained him; be it through light, words, action, or sound, Mikki hopes that his work in turn inspires others to find their medium and communicate. That is why Maya Angelou’s quote from “Our Grandmothers” has always struck a chord with him, and stays planted in his heart and mind: “When you get, give….When you learn, teach.” -Maya Angelou
SHARA WEAVER, Choreographer and Movement Coach
Shara Weaver has studied, performed and taught dances from Ghana and Mali, West Africa for the past decade. Currently, she is working with teachers Ape Fofoo Lettey (Accra, Ghana) and Koo Nimo (Kumasi, Ghana). She dances with group DRUMHAND in Ottawa district schools as a MASC artist and as a special guest in Toronto. As a dancer with RATTLING TRO TRO, she has performed for the Ghanaian High Commission; Mercury Lounge, and the Elmdale Tavern. She has performed at numerous community and professional arts venues including Studio 303 (Montreal), the National Arts Centre’s Fourth Stage, Dusk Dances (TO and Ottawa) and at Canada Dance Festivals. She is Co-Director of Propeller Dance, an Ottawa-based non-profit organization specializing in dance for persons with and without disability. With Propeller Dance, Shara choreographs, writes grants, teaches dance, strategizes organizational development and takes the lead on certain projects such as Propeller’s weekly Children’s program for 4-12 year olds.
