Synopsis of the Play

Monstrous: one woman, two races, four continents, and a suitcase full of secrets.

Monstrous is a 70-minute multidisciplinary solo-show about living at the intersection: interweaving storytelling, song, academic lecture, dance, testimony, and performance, the playwright investigates her family’s secrets and lies, journeys, and DNA to understand what she is. Heir to the losses of the African diaspora and the Holocaust, she confronts her desire for acceptance, her own prejudices, and the complexity of being multi-racial in our “Multicultural” Canadian society. This is a show for anyone who is seeking, if not a home, then at least belonging somewhere, somehow …
